(5+12i)/(8+9i)

Multiply the top and bottom by the conjugate of 8+9i.

(5+12i)(8-9i) / [(8+9i)(8-9i)]

Use FOIL to multiply it out.
= (40 - 45i + 96i - 108i^2) / (64 - 72i + 72i - 81i^2)
= (40 + 51i + 108) / (64 + 81)
= (148 + 51i) / 145
= (148/145) + (51/145)i
