Draw a vertical line separating your paper into two sides (hot-dog style). On the right side of the line, you will record your lecture notes. You will reserve the space on the left side (called the recall column) to go back and record key words and phrases. Use only one side of notebook paper.
Record notes in paragraph form on the right hand side of the paper. Write only general ideas and skip lines after each main idea. Use abbreviations when possible.
Read through your notes make corrections as needed. Jot down main ideas or key words in the recall column to the left of the lecture notes. You may also add your own thoughts or reflections about the notes in the recall column. Review the main ideas and thoughts you have recorded.... these are the "big ideas" that were the "essense" of the lecture.

I have always heard that way of taking notes... as a matter of fact, I use it a lot before tests. It's a practical thing, and it's the fastest way I know to remember keywords. The way you would do it is setting a layout on a piece of paper, you would draw it similarly to a conversion table. First you divide the paper vertically but not in half,... (let's just say) 25% & 75%, and draw a vertical line between that imaginary divisor. On the 25%-half, you would write any keyword or important term. On the 75%-half, you would write the meaning, definition or usage of the word you wrote on the opposite side. I used to use it for Biology classes, math, sometimes English and foreign languages, but mostly for science classes. I hope you can get to use this way of taking notes, it's a cool thing... you will fall in love with it as soon as you try it. ;)
