If you are horrible in return, then you are as bad as the person you are accusing. Be nice, it makes the world a better place.

Your natural behavior emanates from your culture, family background, your education, your circle of friends and your own experience of the world. You will certainly not lower or degrade yourself for the simple reason that the other fellow does not deserve it .You are very right in treating all others in your own way, without discrimination.

If somebody had been horrible to me, that would be the last time I even saw them again, so there would be no question of how I treated them.

Ideally, you should be polite and courteous to everyone, regardless of what they deserve or how they treat you.

But if people treat you poorly, you are not required to continue the connection, conversation, or relationship. You don't have to be "nice" or go out of your way for them, but you should maintain at least a basic, frigid level of politeness.

It works really well. It's about as irritating as you can be to these people not to fall into the trap of behaving as badly as they do, others will know it is their behaviour not yours if you merely let it waft past you and continue happily on your way.
