The 4 year old house we have a contract on tested for high radon levels in the finished basement. I read about it and coming from a family with a high rate of cancer it makes me very nervous. Even if we have it fixed I feel as though I will be too scared to ever spend time down there. The beautiful finished basement was why we were buying the house in the first place. Any advice or personal experience with radon? Thanks!

Radon is a naturally occurring gas, you were smart to test for it. To eliminate the problem, all you have to do is have the radon mitigated by a licensed professional (you can ask the home seller to pay for this), then you will have nothing to worry about!

Radon remediation is not a big deal. Many times, radon can be brought down to acceptable levels merely by capping and sealing the sump pump pit, if you have one. Beyond that, there are simple air exchange systems which will vent out the radon and make the basement safe for use.

Radon is a natural occurrence when granite deteriorates. If you have the equipment installed to rid the room of it you will be fine. It's the over exposure to radon that is dangerous and that will be eliminated by installing the equipment.
