Gallstones are manufactured inside the gall bladder. Most are made of cholesterol, which is a normal part of bile, but some are made of bilirubin, which is also a part of bile. There is good information at http://digestive.niddk.nih.gov/ddiseases/pubs/gallstones/

I had my gallbladder removed when I was 17. I had the stomach pains since I was about 8 years old. They don't really know what causes them but they have a few suspicions. More women get them than men do so they think it may have something to do with estrogen. But women have more body fat than men do and they think it may be cholesterol too. I wasn't super fat or anything. They really just don't know what causes it.

Although I'm 23 now and I'm really picky about eating fried food or anything high in fat and my cholesterol is still a little high. A friend of mine said you can have high cholesterol just based on bad genetics. Go figure.
