Is it safe to use an electric blanket while pregnant?

Concerns have been raised regarding the use of electric blankets or other heating devices such as heating pads or heated water beds while pregant. There is little scientific evidence to prove one way or the other whether these devices may be harmful. There are two areas that should be looked at: electromagnetic fields and body temperature.

Some long-standing research data suggests that the extremely weak electromagnetic field generated by objects such as electric blankets are biologically harmless. Some studies contradict this claim, suggesting that these weak electromagnetic fields may contribute to changes in stress levels memory lapse, cancer, miscarriage or impaired fetal development. These studies, by their own admission, are inconclusive, as they cannot prove that cell damage in test tube experiments is replicated in actual human beings.

Another concern of using heating devices during pregnancy is the actual heat that these products generate. It is possible that raising your body temperature to 101 degrees or higher for an extended period of time may contribute to the risk of miscarriage or neural tube defects. However, It is highly unlikely that such a device would raise your body temperature this significantly or for an extended period of time.

If you are concerned, you should discuss the use of heating devices with your physician. She may have additional suggestions based on your own unique medical history.

I have always heard this is a no-no. I have not heard if it scientifically valid. However, I do not use electric blankets anyway. They can be dangerous in a fire sense and they are pretty wasteful. Go for a down comforter. They are expensive but are so much better than an electric blanket. Plus, you use no electricity. Your own body provides the heat.

Some years ago, they recommended NOT using an electric blanket when pregnant. I don't remember the details of the recommendation. I don't know the current recommendations, but a good, safe solution is to turn on your electric blanket until it is toasty and then turning it off. The blankets will maintain your body warmth in your little blanket nest.

Do they still sell electric blanket? If u have one u kan use it pregnant or not just make sure its not pluged in. Oh Baby way (by the way) did the Baby (he or she) gave u permission to use a pluged electrick blanket? In this case it's best to think of others before ur'self. Good reasoning.

You definitely don't want to overheat yourself during pregnancy, unnecessarily...

There is a section on "overheating"... and it discusses the use of electric blankets, saunas... etc...
