I am 5'2", and I'm planning to learn how to ride by the end of the year. I'm interested in touring and sport bikes but a lot of the bikes i'm looking at like Suzuki's GS500F seemed to be tailored
to taller riders. Can anyone suggest a bike within those categories as well as something that is for small riders? basically what i'm trying to ask is what's a good bike for small beginners?

I am looking for something that is from one of the big 4 Japanese companies(Yamaha,Suzuki,Honda, Kawasaki) and one that doesn't break the bank.

Look at the Buell Blast.

small, light, reasonably fast and they can be found used at a good price.
They're a popular, well liked first bike.

As a standard rule, you should first look at the bikes that appeal to your tastes (type of riding you think you'll be doing), second walk into a motorcycle shop of your choice, try some of the new bikes.

You should be comfortable sitting on the bike, arms relaxed, back straight and feet touching the ground.
The weight of the bike is of some consequence as you will be the operator who needs to maneuver to park it and such. Take that into your considerations.

You need to feel some level of comfort while sitting on the bike before you buy it. After paying 5-10k on a bike, it will not become any more comfortable for you, but will become an expensive garage ornament.

Check out the dimensions of "seat height" as it will make a difference to us who are vertically challenged. 23"-28" is a good place to start, but know this; some manufacturers have a tendency to make wider seats, which spread your legs apart, thus making them shorter.
Good Luck! Have Fun shopping!!

I would say anything 500 cc's or under and no more than 2 cylinders would be good from a performance perspective. As far as height goes, all of the big 4 list the seat height of each model under specifications. Sport bikes will tend to be taller than a cruiser. A Honda Shadow fr instance has a seat height of 25.6" where the GS500F is 31.1".

I would suggest the jap version of the Harley style bike (Honda Davidson's). The seat is low, They are well balanced & the engines are simple & dependable. For a beginner I would stay away from sport bikes. They are very difficult to handle for a new rider, not comfortable on long rides, & are for a single rider.
