You can do this yourself, it takes some preparation and time, and it can turn out great.

You will need to clean and rough sand the surface.

You will need to follow the instructions and do it in a WELL ventilated area. If you can not move the tub outside than you will need to place a fan in the window sucking out the fumes.

Quite easy - with training I might add. I worked for a bathtub re-finisher for many years and saw so many success stories it was unbelievable! You don't lose any space (like you do in a tub liner that is placed on top) and you can pick from a dozen colours at least. A reliable company should give you a 10 year warranty. It is basically the same as having your car painted. The tub will come out looking brand new and will last many, many years if looked after - just like a car. The old surface is prepared before a new surface is sprayed on (like your car) and then it's best to let it dry for at least 5 days before using. Longer if you can. Remember, never use harsh chemicals on any bathtub and NEVER clean your oven racks in the tub! Once the top coating is damaged, be it your tub or your fridge, then after that every time you clean it you are damaging it more.

It can be done if you follow the directions on the kit you buy. The most important step is preparation. If you skimp here, you might as well not do the rest. Don't expect it to look brand new, but it will look better.
