It means it was made of cheap materials that became discolored. You get "bad luck" when you wear it because you have created an expectation about bad luck and then perceive events and act out of that expectation. The ring is an inanimate object. Your experience of "bad luck" is a projection and perception of your own making but you blame it on a ring. Change your mind and your expectations and you will change your "luck."

I'd just say that its a symbol of you not taking care of it.
Now if it changes from yellow and then back to its normal color, (and its NOT a mood ring) then it may or may not be bad luck.
