When I try to leave the village through the east side a harvest spirit called Jackie stops me and says,"LJ! Where are you going without doing your work?" How do I get past him?

You can't.
The story says the valley is connected to Mineral Town, and the game needed a path for mineral town people to come through... Hence that path.
You can never take it, but you can make the eligible ladies come to you if you put a Friends of Mineral Town cartridge in your lower slot.

I never have. It might be there to allow you to later link your DS to another Harvest Moon that hasn't been released yet -- like I did with my AWL and Friends of Mineral Town on the GameCube and GBA. I thought it might link with Magic Melody, because it has a gate leaving the village that you can't use either, but so far, nothing.

You cant. Only the other residents can go there. I dont quite know why there is a lane there, but its not at all possible to go there.
