In this case, the picture came first, then the perception of what it meant. At a Spiritual retreat camp this summer, we did an exercise where we were handed a picture and contemplated upon it's meaning for us. My picture was that of sand dunes in the desert. Looking at it at a surface level, the sand dunes seemed to go on and on forever, with hills and valleys, but no end in sight. Upon contemplation, I realized that I wasn't alone in the desert as initially thought, but I always had inner companionship. I also realized that if I got above the sand dunes, which represented the time track, I could see all from a higher perspective, and the hills and valleys were seen as simply experiences along the way. When in a valley, it's sometimes difficult to see that there are also highs, and when on the highs, it's difficult to balance understanding of the lows that will inevitably come. But, when seen from a higher point of view, it's all just part of the journey, which leads Home to God.

The scorching sun is draining my energy like an IV. I'm tired and beaten down. My mouth is parched and the occasional grain of sand finds its way into my bite. My feet are pulled like magnets to the center of the Earth, refusing me any real progress. I'm isolated and fear my death is approaching quickly. There is a part of me that wants to lie down and sleep, even knowing I'll die if I do. There is an apathy that's swelling up in me - a resignation to the inevitable. Every step takes me nowhere closer to civilization; every dune of sand looks the same as one I passed thirty minutes ago. Mirages fill my peripheral vision and water is now more valuable to me than anything I've ever owned or known. It's here where the men wrote so very long ago of beasts and other hallucinations - where they vividly pictured bejewelled cities in the sky and heard voices they felt were other worldly. I'm the will to power, stumbling all over myself and eventually collapsing right back into the Earth.

I see myself just popping out into a desert with an emerging sandstorm not far away...
...the desert in my imagination is like Far East deserts... golden brown fine sand, hilly location, sand is formed as though snakes passed by (formation caused by wind/sandstorms; S formations)... if there were a sandstorm, everything would seem like a blur, the color of the sand... if there weren't the sky would be crystal-clear blue.

I don't have to imagine it.
I AM in the Arizona desert.
It's actually beautiful in many ways.
Yes, there's barren sandy places, but there's also an abundance of Palm Trees! (Contrary to popular belief, Palm Trees don't need much water and do very well in the desert)
The plant life is gorgeous, and the animal life intriguing.
I've grown accustomed to the warm temperatures.
The sunsets are GORGEOUS!
Those are the pictures in my mind. :)
