Use whichever brand you like, but make sure it's synthetic and meets the BMW LL-01 specs. Make sure you see "BMW LL-01" in their specs sheet.

Here's a full list of every oil that has this. But in your case of course, don't pick the ones for diesel engines...

It's interesting to see many of the "popular recommendations" are not on the list; such as the Mobil 1 5W-30.

I personally use Castrol Syntec 0W-30 (German made - only available in Autozone).

RE:
What oil should you use in a 1998 BMW M3 evolution (e36)? Does it really matter?

This was recommended to me by BMW - Castrol Edge Sport 10W-60 - it costs a lot - about £60 for a complete oil change - from a motor factor. Probably any 10W-60 oil would do but you don't want to muck around with an M3's performance

Best Oil For E36 M3

Most car manufacturers and oil companies suggest you use a full synthetic oil for OBD-II cars. (1995 and newer models). The brand name of any major brand of oil should not matter. In summer weather with combination city and freeway usage, the oil viscosity should be 10W-30 or 10W-40. For cold weather usage, 5W-30 synthetic would be more appropriate.
It shouldn't really matter which oil you use if your BMW is less than 10 years old, or has less than 100,000 miles on it.

Royal purple 10W 40 is the best you can buy. Any other full synthetic 10w 40 oil will work well too.
BTW the E36 M3 evo did not have a 4 banger.

Full Synthetic. All M50 variant engines will benefit from switching to synthetic at any mileage.

Edit:
D'Facts: This motor is a 6 cylinder.

My father, who is a mechanic, swears by Valvoline Dura Blend oil, which is a combination of regular and synthetic motor oil. He claims you get the best of both worlds out of Dura Blend. I have used it in my cars for years and have never had engine trouble, even on cars that have over 150,000 miles on them. Be sure to check your owner's manual to find out what oil weight you need (I'm guessing the manual will probably call for 10W-40).

The pressure quoted on the tyre wall is a MAXIMUM, and is not related to the car that the tyre is fitted to. Do not inflate to the pressure on the tyre wall! As already stated, most BMWs have tyre pressures on a label stuck to the driver's door jam, and some inside the filler.

Euro spec full synthetic from the BMW dealer using BMW CCA discount. Is cheapest synthetic, and is best for your car.
