I'm digging up old music. What are your favorite songs by those considered "outlaws" in country music? Examples of some of my favorites are: Willie Nelson, Gretchen Wilson, Kid Rock, Hank Williams JR, Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash. (Don't know much about Waylon Jennings or David Allan Coe.)
Can you think of any others? I'd love to be introduced to some I don't know.

You mentioned a lack of familiararity with both Waylon Jenning and David Allan Coe. Actually these two, along with Willie Nelson are among the founders of so-called outlaw country music. Outlaw country is simply a rather "bawdy" and occasionally ireverant "backlash" to standard Nashville recordings.

The movement, began in the early 70's, and Waylon and Willie were very instrumental (no pun intended) in founding and promoting outlaw country music.

There album release of "The Outlaws" c. 1973 was the first full-length album to introduce and popularize the movement.
Coe, Jerry Jeff Walker, and others followed. Coe actually has recorded some X-rated albums that are full of race-based lyrics - very funny stuff, if you're not black or easily shocked.

Hank Jr. as well, joined the outlaw movement early on by utilizing some hard rock influences in his music.

Rather than list a thousand songs.......I'd suggest that you simply search of each artists disography -or- pick an artist and input a serach for same on http://www.cduniverse.com. They almost always supply sound clips that will allow you to judge the merit of each song/album.

By the way, and just for your information.......Merle Haggard does not really fit into the outlaw movement, except that he often shunned Nashville for his having embraced a "west coast" country sound....along with Buck Owens and others. Merle and Buck, too name a few epitomize the "Bakersfield (CA) "sound." It's rather mainstream.

OK Kid Rock isn't an "outlaw" as he isn't in Country Music. He kinda tried it and saw it wouldn't work so he went back to his original style, he is just Hank Jr.'s friend as far as Country Music. I wouldn't call Gretchen Wilson an "outlaw" either. An outlaw is someone who the mainstream isn't in love with for starters. Montgomery Gentry are probably one of the closest to Outlaws of the newer people, they do Southern Rock against Nashville's wishes basically. Sorry that did little for your songs list. I could probably list a few if I thought about it.
Are the Good times really over for good(I wish a buck was still silver)-Merle Haggard.
