I don't believe so. There are too many ways for watchdogs to verify the numbers that the government uses to calculate inflation. The formula used to calculate it is available publicly and so anytime someone wanted to test it, they could follow the same procedure to validate the numbers.

Considering all the other things our government has lied about in the past fifty years, it wouldn't surprise me!
