In the movie someone says that he worked for the railroad, shooting chinamen :-o
Did the railroad really hire people to shoot chinamen, and why?

He was probably an enforcer. He was used to kill anyone who tried to stir up dissent among the workers. He was probably also used to clean up problems for the railroad such as people who refused to leave their land and such.

he was a foreman, he did'nt really shoot chinamen, but the chinamen thought he would if they slacked off..

I thought he was a hired mercenary.

Don't say Chinamen. It's Chinese or Asian.
