There's no real advantage to making gambling illegal, other than to protect gambling operations that are exempted from the ban.

For example, say a state prohibits all gambling, except an existing horse track. That's a heck of an advantage for the owner of that horse track. It would also be an advantage for owners of legal casinos just across the state line from the state that prohibits it.

The disadvantage to making it illegal is that potential revenue from jobs and taxes will go where it is legal, while increasing costs to police the prohibited activity.

About the only valid reasons to make it illegal are concepts of the government protecting us from ourselves. The fear is that we might not control our urge to gamble if someone didn't protect us from that.

Why should what I do with my money be of concern to the government? I'll tell you exactly why. Every time something in regards to legalizing gambling comes up, both political parties typically reject it under the guise of what's morally right. That's bull. Even if that was their reason, the government's role is not to be the nanny state moral police. The real reason is they're not getting a piece of the pie. Why else would Internet gambling be outlawed? All of those poker, casino web sites were off-shore in Caribbean islands and Europe.

Do you buy Health, Car, Home or Life Insurance? If so you are in fact gambling i.e. betting against the insurance company.

Do you buy stocks ? That's gambling, i.e. betting they will increase in value

Eat at a restaurant? You're gambling there too, betting you won't get some sort of food poisoning.

Life by it's very nature is a gamble and in the end we all lose to the house.

It's not up to me to prevent stupid people from losing their money fair and square. If they're that irresponsible then they don't deserve to keep it.
