Campbel is right. In English, you should capitalize the first letter in proper nouns. When referring to the Sun, it is a specific one whose name is 'the Sun' and that's why it's capitalized. The same holds with the Moon.

Another word like this in English is 'mom.' If you're referring to your own mother as Mom, then you capitalize it. If you're referring to someone in general, as in saying something like 'soccer moms' then you don't capitalize it because it's a general word and not a specific one.

Io is Jupiter's closest major moon.

The Moon is Earth's only moon.

The galaxy is made up of billions of suns.

Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun.

I'm usually pretty careful to get these right when typing answers here, but that's just because I'm a stickler for grammar.

Certainly. The Sun is a place, and so its name is a proper name, and the normal style in English is to capitalize proper names.

I'd say say yes; when we refer to Planets in the universe, they are almost always capitalized; so why not the Sun too?

I do. And the M in Moon. At least when referring to Earth's Moon and not a moon of Jupiter, or when referring to Earth's Sun and not the sun of another planet, which is a star in Earth's sky. I am not sure it is correct to do so, but I do.

I don't think so, because it's 'the sun' whereas Jupiter is Jupiter not 'the jupiter'.
Anyway, The Sun is the name of a newspaper.
