The Middle Passage was a slave trade route. Slaves were taken from Africa to America and the Carrabean and sold or traded for goods.

What do you want to say about the book? That is your thesis. You could say that the book is a good accounting of the slave trade, or that the author does a poor job. You could comment on the style of writing. The Middle Passage contains much valuable information, however the author uses language that prevents the average reader from easily grasping his meaning, or the exact opposite.
Thesis statements are pretty simple, but you have to know what you are going to attempt to prove in the rest of your essay.
