Has anyone ever tried this? Where do you get the materials?

Making one or modifying one from other parts has been done before.

The first thing you would need would be a working base fan.

After that, the materials are readily available. If you take a snowman (strictly for the white), you can cut it up and restitch it into any pattern you want. Use upholstery thread to sew it up.

Gemmy, when making prototypes, airbrushes their designs on them. While the back lit lighting in not a pretty as dyed fabric, it does look nice.

If you want to get further details, I would recommend membership in the http://www.MyHolidayDisplays.com forum. There are many members that have modified their inflatables and they would be happy to offer you hints.
