I have heard the expression
"That's like the pot calling the kettle black"
The idea is that making a negative characterization is hypocritical in this situation, since the same is true of the pot.

I believe this came from the days when most everyone used black cast iron pots, pans, and kettles. Several here have already explained the meaning ~ (and it's "calling" not "painting")

"Well, isn't that the pot calling the kettle black?"

That means the first person (pot) is pointing out some fault belonging to the kettle, and the kettle (or a bystander) points out that the pot commits the same fault--they both are the same color.

It is two blended expressions, a combination of "painting the town red" and "pot calling the kettle black."

isnt the the pot painting the kettle black...? or am i wrong..
it means that theyre both the same, however one person cna do something and say that somebody doing the same thing is wrong...
