This is my first year doing this. I would like to put up some lights outside on my porch, on the gutters & on the side of my duplex I was thinking of putting lights up in the shape of a star...I don't know how to do this. Please help. Also, what is the easiest and best way to put lights on an artifical tree? It's 7.5 foot tall and it's in sections. Thanks for everyones help :-)

First of all -- go to your local hardware store (or Lowes/Home Depot -- whatever) ... they have LIGHT POLES (and special plastic pieces), for which you can use to help you reach up to the porch and gutters and then that pole will help lift the light strings onto the pieces and they will STAY in place!

Next ...

As far as the form of the shape of a star -- depends on how big you want the star. I'd use some Wire Hangers to Form a Star Shape, and wind the Light string around it (that is the best way -- the star shape you make will be stable).

Finally ... for the tree ... put the WHOLE TREE Together first -- then ... starting at the top, wind the string in a spiral pattern around and around ... and .. make sure to tuck the plug ends into the center of the tree (which is where you will place the electrical power block), and plug everything in (make sure it is only turned on when you are in the house).

(PS == NO Staple Guns! They can easily damage the wires in the light string, and the possibility of a short causing a fire is real. And with Duck Tape .. If you do that to a PAINTED Wall ... well, the paint (and part of the drywall itself if inside your home) is going to be peeled off too).

Do not use a staple gun. If you miss, you will shoot a staple through the cord and will have to repair it. Use light clips. You can purchase them at almost any of the box stores very cheap.

I use clips for my gutters and they help you get nice straight lines.

As far as the star goes, there are many methods you can use.

In fact, on http://www.PlanetChristmas.com , there are many members there that have posted various ways to design Bethlehem stars with lights. Membership on the forum is free and you are not spammed after joining.

As far as decorating a tree, I have found that if you decorate the tree vertically, it will give you the best effects. By going up and down the tree, and then continuing around the tree, you will have a finely lit tree.

For the star pattern it depends on the type of star i reccomend ducttape for holding up the lights because you can justr pull them down. As far as the tree goes put it in an open area and run in circles around it with lights lol..,.

Can't help you on the outdoor lights because I've never done it myself. The tree however, we start at the bottom and go around the tree, branch layer by branch layer, in a upward spiral, when you get to the top, continue back down in a downward spiral.

Use a staple gun. First you must figure out what a star looks like then you staple the light string in the shape you desire. (On second thought, maybe a staple gun is not safe... you have to know which end to point at the house.)

Well the tree question is a no brainer, just put them on like a normal tree. and the house lights, use a staple gun

It's not rocket science, just find a way to put them up there and plug them in.
