Now that they have Russel Branyan, they do not need Rolen. Branyan has the power that Rolen use to have, and not a half-bad defense. Also, Brendan Ryan proved that he could play 3rd base.

He doesn't get along with La Russa either. That could be a factor.

Even at his worse, Scott Rolen is still a far better option than Russell Branyan. There's a reason Branyan has only ever been a platoon guy - his career average is below .230, and he can't hit left-handed pitching. Rolen's batting average and OBP are about 50 points higher than Branyan, and he can hit both righties and lefties. He had a terrible year for power last season, but that was likely due to lingering injuries.

As for defense, Branyan is barely passable at third, while Rolen is among the best of his generation. If the Cards release Rolen, there will be plenty of takers for him, and the Cardinals will become a worse team for making the move.

I say trade him. We can get someone for him. There are teams out there that could use a great 3rd baseman. Maybe we could possibly try and get some starting pitching in trade of Rolen.I hate to see Rolen go, but he has been injured the last couple of years and obviously does not get along with LaRussa. The Cardinals will miss his defensive plays.

I'm stumped. What's wrong with a multi-gold glove winner at third? He's had injuries but he's also had some dynamite offensive seasons there. What if he has another this year? When did Scott Rolen lose his popularity? If it's the injuries, let me point out another third baseman with a lot of injuries -- George Brett. If it's the offense there were two vacuum cleaners at third who had quite a few unremarkable seasons with the bat: Brooks Robinson and Graig Nettles. Gees, if you don't want him I bet there are 20 some-odd teams that'd scoop him up. I still don't see why he's targeted for St. Louis' fan scorn.

If Lowell didn't resign with the Sox, I thought he'd be a perfect fit in Boston. He should bring good value if the Cards want to get rid of him. STL should keep him despite his differences with LaRussa. Outside of Pujols they have no offense. Edmonds is beyond washed up, they have no offense at 2b or ss, Taguchi is a bench player, who knows what Ankiel can do without HGH, and Molina is better than average.
STL should make a serious run at someone like Miggy Cabrera or Torii Hunter to help Albert, or they will be 4th in the central next year.

It's a shame he has gone down hill so quickly; very talented guy back in the day.

trade him to the Yankees! They LOVE past prime, high priced players, and he'd probably be a great defensive first baseman, once he learned the footwork.

I am only half joking here... he's worth more than Clemens, Pavano, Damon, Mussina and some other bad investments they made last year... and they can afford to take the chance.

I think they try to trade him, but with his contract that is going to be difficult. I don't think they release him for the same reason. If he's still on the team he's the starter.
