When I turned on my destop PC this AM, a screen popped up saying " a disk check was being done for consistency". Is that a sign that my PC is going to die soon?

No, this is not a problem unless it happens on a regular basis.

A check disk usually occurs when the operating system ( your PC) was shut down incorrectly or if the power was suddenly turned off.

If it happens repeatedly, you need to investigate it further. Worst case scenario is your drive could be going bad. But that is not a problem because you have your data backed up. RIGHT?

Windows found an error while booting and fixed it automatically. Just a little bug, nothing alarming. It happens sometimes but if you have this kind of message everytime you boot, I would suggest you run a full system anti-virus scan.

I'm not a tech, but if your pc displays a dark screen with a colored line and there is barely a blip, its dying.

Not really, its just check (randomly) to see if your pc is in good shape.
Like going to the doctor anually, or whatever.

No it usually means there was an error in writing to the hard drive...but I would do a scandisk and the defrag the hard drive to be sure...
