My wife has owned an S reg A160 for about 5 years and loves it. Not great acceleration but a good drive and economical. Feels bigger than it looks. But ... over the years, I've changed lots of suspension parts : all 4 springs, drop links & both rear trailing arm bushes. I think the ride height puts too much stress on the suspension.
I've read that the clutch "goes" at circa 40-50k miles. Ours is at 50k with no sign of clutch trouble ... touch wood !!

We hired an old-type Merc A140 a couple of years ago in Germany, and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by it. Huge inside for a small bodied car, economical, comfy, and just a really useful little car. Obviously with the 1.4 litre engine it's no ball of fire, but it held 140km/h (about 87mph) easily on the Autobahn.
Haven't driven the new one, but it's meant to be even better.

lots of problems with the a140. The mass airflow meter is a common problem, this causes bad running and costs about £500 quid to fix. The starter motor goes wrong and it takes about 4 hours to remove and refit.
