I like the idea of naming a star...

How about getting him a tree to plant in the garden, perhaps one that bears fruit or blossoms in the month he was born!

Nothing made of silver that his poor parents have to keep polishing!

One of the nicest presents my daughter got given (and this is a unisex idea) was the complete box set of the Chronicles of Narnia - timeless books, great stories and with beautiful illustrations. Obviously he won't be able to appreciate them for quite a few years but I've just started reading my daughter's christening set to her and she loves them.

It depends on how much you are willing to spend.

For less than £50 / $60 you can pay to name a star as a present. You could then present the parents with the certificate and coodinates so they know where to look to view it.

I thought I was being original when I bought a lovely silver plated tooth and curl box when I went to a christening last year. Turns out they got 8 of them in total!!
I played safe recently when I went to one and got some Disney hand puppets instead. They were much more appreciated!

For a christening, I recommend a personalized gift, especially something the baby can't outgrow. How about a personalized sign for the nursery? They have nice ones here: http://www.mysweetandsour.com/
