There are a collection of 5 to 15 genes that appear to be involved, for accuracy sake these are not "gay" genes they are more appropriately "preference genes. Another causal factor is that each son a woman has the chance that the next son will be gay is increased. Basically this means that it can be caused by either genetic factors or natal environment factors, additionally there appears to be no evidence to support post birth environment affecting preference.
Edit: A region of the brain has been identified as determining sexual preference in ferrets and it seems correlated to humans as well.
There is no element of choice about it, there maybe some affect by molestation, but it is unclear if there is any evidence to back that up.

What causes heterosexuality? Just as straight folks do not CHOOSE to be attracted to the opposite gender, gay folks do not CHOOSE to be attracted to the same gender. ACTING on the attraction is a choice for both heterosexuals and homosexuals, but the attraction itself is innate within each person.
