My son is growing pumpkins from seeds he planted at his school. There are 5 little plants about 4" high growing in a plastic cup. The roots are looking a little cramped. We live in the Tampa area of Florida. Can I plant them outside now or do I just get a bigger pot to put them in? I don't know anything about growing pumpkins, but my son really wants to grow one. Can someone give me some advice about when to plant them, what to feed them, what about bugs, where do I plant them outside (sun, shade?). Thanks in advance!

plant them outside in the sun and I live in clearwater so I know the temps are still pretty warm now and remember pumpkins run a very large vine so where you put them make sure you have room for them to run . Just use your average run of the mill plant food to fertilize them and that should do the trick . I hope I helped and god bless you .

I am not sure if you have the right soil conditions. You should be able to find that out on a garden website. I would prep an area with topsoil and plant the pumpkin outside. Florida might not have the right temps for pumpkin. But you are in the cool season now and might get lucky. We had a very dry and hot summer here on the east coast and my daughters pumpkin plant did fine. We did have to water it from time to time.

You can grow just about anything in FL. Plunk the poor little cramped darlings in the dirt, in full sun, With at least 12" of space between plants. They are ground vines and can get quite large. Don't let them get dried out, don't worry about bugs, MiracleGro every 2-3 weeks, have fun even though it is a little late in the season, you may get a punkin out of them.
