So hard to answer, because lots of different genres were emerging. I think I'll go with Tony Martin. An unsurpassable balladeer, who is not so well known these days, even though he was massive in the 40s and 50s. Later, as the late 60s came around, it would have to be Paul Rodgers from Free, (Bad Company, The Firm, Solo Work, Queen).
I know this is cheating and you said pick just one, but that is just so hard. And they are VERY different genres. I will discipline myself now and not add a huge list of all the others I think are wonderful.

I like Frank Ifield. He was/is unique in his yodelling style. His redords hit the top when I waqs a teenager and I have great memories of where I was at the time.

well they were the ones which laid the foundation for rock n roll and metal respectively,,by their roaring vocals,,,,and also with their charismatic onstage presence......... They raised the Rock music to next level........
