Both 1 & 2 offer valid suggestions, and you may get many opinions here.

You don't state if the finish is; or will be natural; or whether or not it's been stained prior to your efforts.

Certainly Lacquer creates a nice finish. Poly is as good; Varnish works. All will deliver some decent levels of sealing and sheen. What you might investigate is their durability, and reaction/response to hot or cold drinks set on the table.

All finishes may need multiple coats; and sanding between; although I prefer steel wool between. In that context the reason is often residue on the piece; which can be removed with Tac Cloth. Another issue in the rationale behind sanding between coats; is that the more a substance is agitated prior to application; the more likely you are to have air bubbles form, and surface as the coating dries.

My coffee table generally ends up with either soda cans, coffee cups, or water glass sitting on it. I used "bar" lacquer on it so it won't show the white stains left by a sweating glass, or the once in a while spills. Easy to clean up.
