I would definitely discourage it.
A child that age is simply better off playing with hands-on, imagination toys, or picture books. And go outside and run around! He'll spend enough time in front of a screen (tv, video games, computer) over the course of his life anyway. No benefits from rushing things.

I'd have to say I think yes, 4 is a bit too young.
Its just my opinion, but try to get presents that encourage your child to be active,
I'm sorry its just that I have seen all this before, with my younger brothers, my mother introduced them to computer games very young and now thats all they do, rather then playing sports or socialising.
Would your 4 year old even know how to use it yet? I guess it depends on what your child is like.
But at the end of the day, its your child and you'd know whats best...
Hope this helps...

Yes I do, there are other games that are similar in the preschool section, they are easier to use and play, think of them as simplified versions of Nintendo, he will be happier with something he can handle and win. My grand kids, are all computer able, but even they did better with Nintendo after they were six, its less frustrating for them.

not at all, i have a ds lite and they are very sturdy i have dropped it everywhere, also they have a great section of kids games which are very helpful in developing there little minds full of knowledge and essential life skills such as reading, math etc
my sister who is a teacher 4 kids says all her kids in her group have one and they are so much brighter and better knowledge than the place where she used to work before the ds came out
also great selection of games

my cousins both young one was 3 or 4 share a DS lite, and they seem to love it, but don't take the "couch potato" thing to seriously the DS is their favourite toy but they don't play it 24/7 kids seem to get bored playing one game all the time they like to do different things.

I think if you did want to buy him an electronic game there are much better ones out there for that age group, I would suggest waiting until he was 7 or 8 where he would understand more that it is easy to break and he would also get more fun out of it.

Is he VERY careful with his other toys? DS Lites are not indestructible, you need to be careful with the touch screen. Also, almost all games require some reading skills.

My nephew is four and he's had a DS for ages, but he's very careful with things. I think it depends on the child.

You should never be encouraging him to become a couch potato. Get his an out door toy that required physical effort to use and play with, a bike or something like that
good luck
