My friend has a photography studio, and she asks familys to wear strong colours, like blues, greens, but nothing too bright. Stay away from too many pastels and dont wear red. Red will glare. But then it always depends on the backround. If its a photographer who is taking them, you should call and ask, they wont mind and you want to get it right!!

All wear red. Especially if this is a Holiday photo. It stands out. Red turtlenecks look great. Red sweaters, v necks, shirts, long sleeve, tank tops, anything. T-shirts in red don't look that great- but many other things do! (the person above me says it doesn't look good, but I believe it does with the right backround chose, to not clash)
Forest Green is also a great color to wear (its pretty, a nice color for film, and great for Holidays)
Black and White is also classy.
Happy Photoing!

I've always been told to wear dark solid colors. Light colors fade out your face, and patterns take away from your face.
Also, don't try having everyone wear the same color. I don't know why, but I have been told that this does not work in a group photograph.
Have you ever seen those sports group pictures that your kids have taken. The uniforms kinda take over the picture.

You should all wear the same color top and the same type of bottoms. For example, everyone could wear jeans and a white shirt or Khakis and a blue shirt....just so that you all match and the colors aren't distracting. The clothes don't have to be exactly the same but just the same color.
See how nice this looks when everyone wears the same color:

For family portraits, nothing is better than just white blouses/dress shirts and jeans for everyone. Fitted obviously. It provides a fresh pallet to bring out the colors and contrasts of everyone's features. Nothing looks more classy or timeless, trust me!

Why don't you choose a thyme or you all wear the same colour, keeping it plain. Men wearing suits, same colour if possible.
I would choose, white/grey/navy.
