same is said for magnets..take for example the +/- side of a magnet or call them north and south.
2 north ends(+) repel each other, as do 2 south ends(-)
Have you ever heard of the phrase "opposites attract"? It does actually serve a purpose outside of relationship talk.

Two ions of the same charge repel each other and it takes work to force them together. Any work used to force them together can be recovered when they are set free (like lifting a weight against gravity increasing its potential energy that is recovered when it falls). Like poles of bar magnets also repel each other (and the magnetism exists because of the alignment of atoms and their electrons within the bar). Perhaps a deeper question is why do electrons behave the way they do? We can observe how they behave but we can not (yet?) dismantle electrons (like a car engine) to determine how they do it.
