You know, I think The Late Show with David Letterman could use the help of anybody off the streets. I want David Letterman to be funny, but it's just not happening.

I don't have the ability to do that ..... unfortunately neither do most of the current writers. The really excellent comedies (and who wants to watch comedy that is any less than that?) are all too rare.
