Friday the 13th is considered unlucky because the arrest of Jaques de Molay, Grand Master of the Knights Templar, and 60 of his senior knights occured on Friday, October 13, 1307 by King Philip IV of France is the origin of this superstition. That day thousands of Templars were arrested and subsequently tortured. They then 'confessed' and were executed. From that day on, Friday the 13th was considered by followers of the Templars as an evil and unlucky day.
It's also said that de Molay cursed both the King and the Pope on that day, telling them they would be dead within a year, which they both were.
The combination of 13 already being considered unlucky, the horrors of that day and an alleged curse coming true kept the Friday 13th superstition going.
Btw, a fear of Friday 13th is called paraskavedekatriaphobia.

Depends on who you're talking to. My mom's side of the family is very superstitious, a bat got into my grandmother's home and that means 'someone will die' and a year later sure enough someone did die, but that was because of a heart-attack. Coincidence? Probably, but you're going to get mixed answers.
On Friday the 13th I got hit in the face with a hockey puck and started bleeding. I'm pretty sure this was a coincidence though, but again, it's all opinion, really.
I agree with you, it's just another day where people have a reason to be dramatic or hit people with hockey pucks and blame it on the date.
LOL.
Hope this helped!
P.S - As for the number thirteen, my teachers told me that there is no such thing as floor thirteen in a hotel, ANY HOTEL, and that's due to superstitions.

13 only applies to groups of people. Buddha had twelve disciples. One betrayed him. Jesus had 13 apostles. One betrayed him. Jacob had 12 children. Joseph was betrayed. Even in the story of the nights of the round table, there were 12 knights. Lancelot betrayed King Arthur. Twelve is the perfect number for a corporate board of directors, executive team, or any group of people. A team with twelve members will accomplish any goal. But, if the leader is the 13th person, the leader will be betrayed..

Friday the 13th is not unlucky. It is only considered unlucky by a very small number. For the Chinese it is the 4th, for others it is other days and numbers. Sort of makes the whole thing ridiculous. I used to believe in Astrology until i discovered Chinese Astrology and well - sort of made all of it look so ridiculous.

Luck does not exist. Everything that happens can be scientifically and mathematically predicted. Just because the date of a certain calendar is reputed to be "unlucky" by superstitious ignorami doesn't mean anything. There are many different calendars, all of which have their own days believed to be "bad luck."

and right you are (for not trusting these things). thirteen was certainly lucky for the fledgling usa. after all we had 13 colonies, the flag had 13 stars, with the blue and red stripes to match, on the emblem there are 13 arrows, 13 eagle feathers. the fear of thirteen is a fear borne out of ignorance and biased fear perpetrated by either parents or associates. for some, it may bring bad luck on occasion but for others, it's a gold-lettered day!
