Nickel Cadmium (NiCd) and earlier battery technologies suffered from 'Memory effect'; as a result it was recommended to completely discharge batteries before recharging them to full.
Nickel Metal-Hydride (NiMH) show some memory effect and Lithium Ion (Li-ion) batteries claim not to show memory effect at all.
It is generally safe to charge Li-ion based batteries at will. It is recommended that every 30 cycles or so the battery should be fully discharged and then fully charged.
Most modern batteries in electronic gadgets are Li-ion batteries.

Drain it to very low like 5% or lower, completely draining it means the computer itself is abnormal shutdown which is not good. Though good ones will not suffer abnormal shutdown with good power management.
If recharges whenever it still had a lot of charge memory effect may kick in; even I did kill Li Ion that way.

It does not really matter since whichever way you treat the battery, its ability to keep power will degrade with time say.. within 2 years time.. This is why when you buy a laptop (any brand) the battery only comes with 1 year warranty regardless of the warranty on the machine.
I keep the power plugged in when working with the laptop then unplug it before going to bed.

Not necessarily. I'm sure you've heard of "stacking", where the battery is charged irregularly and therefore loses its capacity. However, laptop batteries are usually good about not stacking. If you want to be really safe, just charge it regularly at a certain point of drainage (say, 5% battery left).
