just want a few opinions really - it's early days but we have names in mind.....for a boy we have picked Bernard Thomas (might call him Barney)....and for a girl Isabella Marion Martha...obviously in both cases the child will be called by the first name only! What you think?

Bernard is shortened to Bernie in America in Ireland it's Barney...which is after his grandfather who passed away before our wedding.

I think the opinions here are very different (and welcomed)...but neither of us like silly names for boys or girls...can you imagine an old woman called Chloe for example...to me that's silly...but everybody is entitled to their opinions...

FAO secsy19..it's trange that your Irish husband has never heard of Bernard shortened to Barney...I know 4 other people named Bernard and all either are called Bernard or Barney...Bernie is short for Bernadette where I live!

All opinions are very welcome+appreciated...I think my wife won't be budged on the names though regardless! I like them too and I suppose so long as we both like them then that's all that matters....there are definitley differing opinions from country to country when it comes to names and it's all a matter of opinion at the end of the day...I know a couple who named their daughters ellen, grace, jane and molly - some might say it's old fashioned - but we think it's lovely!

its your choice but I dont like Bernard. I think its old fashioned, even shortened to Bernie or Barney (yep singing and dancing purple dinosaur comes to mind) I dont like it. My husbands Irish and has never heard of it shortened to Barney. Maybe use Bernard as the middle name?? You said it yourself - it was your hubby grandfather name. Isabella is lovely though.

I don't like Marion and I don't like Bernard.
However, with the reasons for your choice of Bernard, I think it's a nice gesture. Isabella is a nice name.

I too like traditional names and have chosen the name Thomas (unless when he arrives he doesn't look like a Thomas).

I disagree with 'Chloe', it's quite a common name at the moment and when the generation where 'Chloe' is a common name grows old, it will be a common old name too. Perhaps becoming a firmly fixed old persons name like Florence, for instance ...

Isn't Bernard usually shortened to Bernie?
You just have to bear in mind that other people (especially their friends as they get older) don't always shortern their names to they way you would like them to.

Do this yell the name out as if you was calling the child and listen to how it sounds. Does it sound more like your calling a dog or a child? For a girl I like the name Skyleen, Migeli, or Naysha they are spanish names, and for a boy I like the names Ammante,Govnni or Dangelo again Spanish names. Good luck and just remember yell the name out and if it sounds to your liking then its the one.
