You can take a train from Schiphol airport to Amsterdam Central Station 24 hours a day, in the daytime they go several times an hour. The trip from the airport to Amsterdam Central Station takes about 15 minutes.

There are very many things to do in the time you're there, http://www.iamsterdam.com is another great site for ideas.

In Amsterdam you can travel by tram, bus and taxi. If you're going to be using the trams and busses I suggest you get a day or weekend pass, you can buy those at the same place you buy your trainticket at the airport...

As far as hotels go, it all depends on your budget and wishes. http://www.hotels.nl is a good site for picking one. You don't necessarily have to be right next to Central Station as you can get to Schiphol from anywhere in Amsterdam in less than an hour. Especially if you take a taxi to and from the airport. Your hotel might even be able to arrange transportation for you.

There are many things to do in Amsterdam, the list of museums is to long to copy here, all important styles of art are in town and many museums devoted to places or other collections, from glasses to pianolas, and from handbags to architecture.

Here is a list with many museums: http://www.amsterdam.info/museums/

Shopping is readily available on the Saturday, but the shops will often close at 5 PM.

I would advice you to select one or two museums and walk in the town for a big part of the day. If you like to be shown around a canal tour is the thing to do, easy to get from the Centraal Station.

And in the evening you can go out, you can go to a 'cafe' the local version of a pub. You can to a club or a concert, or just dine out.
A good place to look for dinner and entertainment is round Leidseplein.

I would suggest that you stay in Amsterdam as this is more convenient to the attractions. A couple of things that I think are worthwhile... a visit to the VanGogh museum, Anne Frank house and a canal trip. See attached site for other suggestions and further information.
