it just seems like americans work way too much, there are too many bills, and too many commitments that you have to fulfill each day just to get by, how does oneself find relief from all the thought consuming nature of the world as it is today

Well lately I have been VERY stressed out and because of it I've become incredibly depressed. Actually I was to the point where I actually concidered suicide. I can't afford to see a therapist or to get on antidepressents. So I've recently started doing something I NEVER thought I would do. I've been smoking cigarettes and that really helps. I know it's bad for me but I figure it can't be worse than having suicidal thoughts.

A silent walk in an open air area, possibly on the slope of the near-by hill will do...If you're afraid of walking alone take someone you trust with you ! You should also reduce your TV-watching time to an essential minimum, that is news and weather report in the evening, above all try to ignore all the violent movies and stupid commercials ! If you smoke, or you are on something, you should drop it immediately...Don't take on you any unnecessary burdens, relax...

Not recommending any type of mind altering substance...sorry. That only deflects the problem momentarily.
I have come to utilize the Serenity prayer....accept the things I cannot change and the courage to change the things I can.
Bills, appointments,and commitments will always be there.....trudge thru as it comes.
Always, take time for yourself, though
