US football too uncivilized. If they were real players, they wouldn't have to wear all that equipment.

David, For starters you are on the right track by interacting on this thread. you will pick up the lingo and all the off season gossip first. This is part of the unofficial rule book.
I can't say that I have ever seen a rule book, although I suppose there is one.
The best thing that I can suggest, is for you to watch a video of any of the matches, and learn how it's played. You won't need to know the technical side of the game, as most supporters don't. In fact the game is modified from time to time, as new issues come to light.
Years ago, a player would virtually stay in the same position on the field, and the football would be kicked to him to either mark, or get the ball the best way he could, but in today's play it is more of a running game as the players are trained differently, are fitter, & coaches have get-togethers to make the play more difficult to get the ball.
The rules will almost, always go the way of the side that you support, Aussie rules is a bit like that. You will often hear supporters yell "Ball"if they don't like what they see.
The best tip is to listen to the commentary, and of course watch the game. the umpire will be a good indicator of how the rules are applied, because they are animated, love blowing their whistle, and crashing into players and then reporting them.
Still confused, join the club.
And yes, they are real players, who don't need to wear safety equipment, they have their own.

You'll find the rules (all five of them) at http://www.footy.com.au/dags/FAQ1v1-5.html US NFL footballers wear all that safety stuff because until they did people were actually killed playing the game.

You could write to the AFL City of Melbourne in Victoria Australia post code 3001 and ask them to help you.
