There are scientists that say some animals don't have a brain complex enough to feel pain, while this may be the case even if a fish does feel pain there is no way to gauge the pain and therefore no basis for this idea.

An old Chinese proverb from the rules of Feng Shui says that if a fish dies in your house, you are to rejoice, because the dead fish will sucker in some disastrous event that was in your cards and spare you. I guess the redder the eye, the better job it does of doing this.
