Hello,
(ANS) AHH YES!! I had the same question myself, its more tricky than you think but I found the answer by
a) look at the environment agencies website for flood risk, you put in your postcode.
b) The best answer came from the Ordinance Survey website, again you have look at your local area and look for the fine contour lines. You may find that its NOT going to be extremely precise. I found my house was between 20 to 50 contour lines, thus my estimate was my house is 35 to 40 feet altitude above sea level here in Leeds.
c) Hand held GPS may give you altitude (altitude is also a measure of height upwards from sea level) but not all GPS system give this too. The good ones or expensive devices I suspect have this feature.

Originally (Before satellite systems were invented) the altitude was calculated by triangulation. Starting from the sea level (Known altitude) they measured the distance and the angle from the horizontal and they calculated the altitude
If you go to the top of some hills in this country you can still found the reference marks used to to these measurements and calculations
It is also possible to find out the altitude the same way aeroplanes do.
Measure the static pressure of the place, and compare it with the static pressure at sea level. the instrument used to do it is named "Barometric Altimeter".
Even the most modern aircraft must fit this type of instrument as emergency instrument.

The easiest way to find the plinth level of your home is to relate it to the nearest Railway Station from your home.
On the Board of name of the station you will find MSL on the
bottom right hand corner.MSL means height of mean seal level
at this point. This level may be transfered by means of Dumpy level .A Dumpy Level is a survey instrument used in measuring the difference in level between two places on the earth.
I hope it will clear your conception and now you can easily measure the height of your house from the sea level.

Step out side and if your feet get wet you are quite close to sea level. Or look at a map and find out where the sea is.....

Look at the contours on an ordinance survey map, or use a small hand held GPS.
