So did Magglio Ordonez. He deserved a look from the writers. You have to keep in mind: While one single writer might be good and perceptive, two or more writers become a gaggle of gossiping old women. This is why a Player of the Year award is needed, so that the writers won't get such headaches voting. Hey, A-Rod won. Be grateful. Other MVP winners never got the award at all.

Maybe because Magglio Ordonez put up comparable HR and RBI numbers and had a higher BA? A-rod could leave the Yankees and they'd still be a great team. If the Tigers lose Magglio they'll be terrible again.

It's all straight up prejudice and politics. An objective vote would have been unanimous.
For all the same reasons lay people hate A-Rod, the powers that be do as well. It's sad, but true. At least that hate didn't keep him from winning the title he earned. He truly was the MVP.
Bar none.

because there were a few smart voters that understood that magglio was way more valuable to his team than a-rod. yea, arod had many more homers and some more rbi's. but maggs put up solid numbers, won a batting title and kept his very injury ridden team in the playoff chase all year long.
the yanks without arod, would have still been a great team. the tigers without maggs, they would have been a .500 team at best.

Because there's always some curmudgeon out there that for whatever reason wil dance to music that only he hears. Look at the HOF voting ;there's never been a candidate that got 100% of the vote How is that possible ?-see above

seorph - the voting is done before the playoffs start. The only way the voters would know who's going to lead their team to the World Series is if they're psychic.

The voters are newspaper reporters. They always let their regional prejudices influence their voting.
It is the same thing in the Hall of Fame voting.
When Nolan Ryan was voted in one reporter had an article as to why he did not vote for Nolan, his reason was that he saw Nolan pitch in relief once in New York and he blew a save, so that meant he wasn't Hall of Fame material.
Anytime you have people voting on something like this and they are allowed to set their own standards then it is surprising more people did not vote for a hometown player.

You very seldom have a unanimous agreement on anything. He won the award and that is all that counts.

The two that didn't go to A-Rod were cast by the two Detroit writers -- both (quite coincidentely) cast their vote for Detroit Tiger Magglio Ordonez.
