I have seen mostly in football that the quarterback very seldomly runs the ball more than 5 yards before passing the ball to his fellow teammate. The quarterback usually scans the area to find a man. Why don't he run for awhile and then either pass or try to score? By scanning, he is more likely to get sacked or to fumble the football.

once the QB passes the line of scrimmage he has to hold on to the ball and run until he is tackled...he slides...or runs out of bounds....he can lateral the ball backwards but not forwards...otherwise it is an illegal forward pass

In American football, the QB cannot throw a forward pass after crossing the line of scrimmage. If he crosses the line of scrimmage, he can throw the ball to player behind him, this is called a lateral, but it is very risky because if the pass is incomplete, it is considered a fumble and you have a live ball on the ground that could be recovered by the defense. Most QB's don't run very often because either 1) they are slow or 2) to avoid the risk of injury.

Any QB can run the ball as far as he wants. He can no longer pass the ball once he is past the line of scrimmage. Hope that answers the question.

If they pass the line of scrimmage, they aren't allowed pass the ball to anyone.
They aren't really as fast as some of the other team mates that they are looking to pass to.
Since they're slower, they will less likely go for the touchdown themselves.
They have to scan the area to find an open man and hope his linemen do their job well, while still being alert in case of a sack.

If you have a pocket passer that is all he really can do. If you have a QB that can scramble he is more likely to just run the ball if no one is open. The longer the play goes on the more defensive players that will get into the back Field. So if no one is open or going to get open soon he has to either run it or get rid of it before he gets a loss of yards.
