Europeans spread diseases, not as policy but by accident; they had immunities to sicknesses Native Americans didn't. Asians/Chinese had the same immunities, for diseases such as smallpox spread from Europe to Asia and back again over the centuries.

In return, Native Americans gave syphilis to Europe..

de Gama was indeed searching for spices from what is now Indonesia, the Spice Islands of the Moluccas......pepper especially was the only way to preserve meat before refrigeration; an ounce of pepper, brought by Malay sailors to Chinese, sold to Chinese who took it overland;and by camel train to the Mid East where it was resold to Arab merchants.........well, by the time that once of pepper reached Rome or Lisbon it was actually worth its weight in gold.......

THAT'S why De Gama and Magellan and Dias and the rest of them were looking for the Indies.....they wanted a sea rout to Spice Islands that cut out the Chinese and Arab middlemen

Spreading Christianity would have been a part of it, but not the main reason; and there were no Christians in Indonesia or even India when these first voyages were made
