When the heart stops, a person is considered dead. The brain dies once oxygen has stopped reaching it due to the cease of blood circulation, which is encouraged by the beating of the heart. The brain takes a few mintues to fully die, so if the heart was encouraged some how to beat again, a person can be revived. Of course, the longer the brain stays without oxygen, the more damage it inhibits.
A person cannot be buried if he/she is brain dead, but have a heart beat and other vital body parts are functioning. So brain death means the person is not functional any more, but to be dead-to-be -put-in-a -coffin -dead, your heart must stop beating..

Both criteria have been used-in the event that one's heart stops beating and can't be restarted, brain death is inevitable and needn't be proven. In the event that a person is relatively well physically-that is, the heart continues working with little or no assistance-absence of higher functions of the brain has been used as a proof that that person technically no longer is alive.

Rahul, the question should read "considered to be dead"?
When his brain stops functioning a person is legally dead in the United States. In other countries it can be different.

The brain is an amazing organ. It's starts working as soon as you wake up and doesn't stop until you get to the office.

It is when brain function has ceased. Legally, someone can be dead, but a breathing machine and feeding tube can keep the body ( i.e. the organs) alive and healthy.

Factually when you start to smell really bad and your brain does not tell you to breath because it is a dead battery now. Dead people often lose bowel control as well.
