32 countries have compulsory voting, Australia being one of them. I don't know if governments should make people vote though. the vote of a person who has no interest in politics and is just voting for anyone because they have to, has the same weight as a vote that has been carefully considered and researched.
the more people you force to vote, the more 'stupid' votes you get and this can seriously sway an election.

America is a free country. This means, sometimes unfortunately, that we can't force people to vote. It's up to the schools to educate future voters on the importance of becoming informed about government and voting on the basis of knowledge.

people won't vote. they have no faith in the government anymore and thus the only people that even vote are in the age range of 50 and above and we all know there point of view. young people would vote if it was cool but, the political agendas of the people in this country don't effect are everyday lives. mtv needs to handle the tasks of incouraging young voters.

It should do nothing.
Its like asking what the government should do to get more people to drive automobiles. If they don't drive, don't make them, if you make them, they will probably get in a accident.
I don't know why so many people think people should be forced to vote when they obviously have no idea about the issues at hand. If they did, they would vote.
Some people don't care. Therefore don't force it on them.
