You know I grew up and was taught in the united states we were a constitutional republic. In a constitutional republic people elect representatives to represent our voice and our belief in different matters... If this were true why do politicians run on platforms rather then listen to the voice of the people? Are these people not supposed to "represent" us?

You may have noticed by reading Yahoo answers that the "people" do not speak with one voice, and some speak louder than others. Politicians choose which voices to listen too, propose a platform, then we vote to see which has the majority support in winner take all elections. If elections were held so the top 3 or 4 candidates out of a field of 10 were chosen more voices would be represented in government. instead of just the 2 parties, but they would still need platforms.

I'm with you. The first thing that I would do is get rid of NAFTA. Bring back the jobs that we gave away to other countries. This was a big mistake in the first place. We have become the buyers instead of the sellers. This is where all of our economic problems are coming from. We need to remain a Constitutional Republic. If we don't act fast than this will become pure democracy. Spending trillions of dollars on nothing is like throwing money into a black hole. Someone asked the question: If all the people were blind would Obama have won the election? Well, that's exactly what they were, Blind.

Yes we are. But vote_usa bring up very good points as to why it seems to have changed. The bottom line is voter/citizen apathy.

We are coming to a very dangerous point where people are more interested in getting all the freebies they can from the Govt. rather than taking care of what is needed. And the more people demand that the Govt. take care of things in their personal life or are covinced that the Govt. needs to take care of them the more politicians will run on their "Platforms" to give out the most freebies rather than actually representing the people.

There is hope though. People are getting wise to some of the games played by Politicians and standing up. The immigration issue for example. Dems and Reps have their hands dirty on this one. Each wanting open borders for different reasons. But it looks like the people as a whole have said "NO MORE!" and they seem to be getting the hint. For now.

We are a Federal Constitutional Republic, and have always been one.

To the guy saying our Presidents are related, allow me to own that position.

Nearly all of them that are related are at least 3rd-12th cousins apart from each other, do you even know your 3rd cousin? Let alone your 12th? I sure as hell don't

And another thing, the people in positions of power, be it by money or politics, tend to match up their children with each other, not some poor schmuck on the street. Or that family continues doing what they've done, for years.

I think we may have been a constitutional republic once. We are an Oligarchy now. Let me rephrase. We are effectively an oligarchy. Our government still technically operates as a representative system but those who can afford lobbies or who befriend elected leaders through contributions to their campaign have more influence on politics then the average citizen. Their influence is enough more to consider them in effective control of the government.

Because the average people don't care much about the "Constitutional" part anymore.

A platform can easily tell a voter what the politician has to offer for free (usually a unconstitutional service).

The few like you and I and many here on answers are the minority, who end up being painted as "conspiracy theorists" because we often draw attention ot things like this.

The average person consumes American idol over a presidential debate at ratio of 25 million to 5 million. %25 of all pregnancies end with abortion. That says allot about the mindset of people.

We were until 1865.We degenerated into a mob-rule Democracy, and now we are about to enter a Fascist New World Order in the next decade.Well over 3 dozen of our presidents are bloodline related, which tells us they are selected, not elected. That's why things get worse for the average person no matter which party takes office or congress. The illuminati runs this world.

We are supposed to be, however, somewhere along the way the most of the elected ones became deaf to the American voice and decided they would do things their way to line their own pockets, further their own interest and not the interest of the American People. However, I think they will soon find out in 2008 that We the People demand that they listen to us if they want to be elected or re-elected.

So you mean to tell me that if 65% of Americans oppose pork and beans, you won't see ANY US politician shouting about the evils of pork and beans?
