Radicalized Abolitionists in New England and radicalized State Righters in South Carolina. The voices of intolerance and hate overwhelmed the moderates and led the nation inexorably into Civil War.

No one really "Started the American Civil War". Tensions had been mounting for a very long time. Cultural, economic and political differences separated both sections of the country. At the center of all this was the issue of Slavery, as it was tied to nearly every issue in one form or another. The Southern States succeeded from the Federal Union feeling that the Federal Government would no longer represent its interest and that they would forever be a political minority. The concept of succession was one held by many at the time both north and south. In the North, the concept that the Union could not be dissolved had grained hold with many but some still felt that succession was fine. In the following months, the Southern states formed a new government, the Confederate States of America. At issue was what Federal property they could take with them. The Lincoln administration argued none and that succession was illegal. The Federal garrison at Fort Sumter, SC was asked to surrender by the Confederate forces there. The commander refused and a crisis situation arose. When Lincoln sent reinforcements to supply the garrison, the Confederates took this as an act of invasion (War) and fired on Fort Sumter. The Confederates were guilty of the first shot, but to say that they were not provoked would be to misunderstand the events that lead to war.

What caused or started the American Civil War? Three big reasons : 1. The Free Trade Policy 2. The Advocacy of Slavery 3. The Doctrine of State Sovereignty and Supremacy Read Samuel M. Schmucker's 'The History of the Civil War in the United States' (1865), it offers real information, and not any biased opinions about the North "invading" Fort Sumter.

Uh ... the Americans, ha ha, just kidding. The Republicans opposed the expansion of slavery into U.S. territories and when Lincoln (a Republican) won the presidential election in 1860, seven southern states seceded from the union. On April 12, 1861, confederate forces attacked Fort Sumter in South Carolina and the rest, as they say, is history.

The first shot was fired at Ft. Sumter from a battery commanded by General PGT Beauregard, CSA. While there was an attempt by southern troops to take a Union fort earlier, this was the shot that led to the US declaring war on the Confederacy. You could argue that Lincoln started the war by declaring it, or the government of South Carolina for being the first state to secede.

The Damn Yankees started the war of aggression.

Slavery was an issue that didn't bother anybody, but the 'North' had to pay their employees. The 'South' only had to house, feed, clothe and be medically responsible for their 'property'.

Yes, the 'history books' would like you to believe that the North was very upset about the South having 'slaves', but fact is, the South was making more profit.

Eli Whitney, a British guy who helped the north become industrialized but on a visit to friends in the south invented the cotton gin. He started the north on the road to industrialization and the south on to profitable cotton production. Also, Lincoln knew that if he won the election that there would be a war and he didn't drop out.
