I was 90% effaced and 1 cm dilated and my doctor said I wasn't going into labor anytime soon; however, that night I did. I would give yourself at least a week before getting your hopes up.

Congratulations!
Can't tell you how much longer it will be, but it is a good sign that your body is getting ready. Some women can walk around weeks fully dilated while others don't dilate until they go into labor. I lost faith in the dilation checks after my 3rd pregnancy. One week I was 2 cm, the next nothing. A lot of it has to do with how much pressure the baby is putting on your cervix at the time.
Also don't fret about not knowing what to expect. I too was induced with the first, and the second came natural. I was in a panic just about the whole time thinking I wouldn't know the signs of labor. Trust me you will know!
Good Luck!

Nobody can say exactly when you will go into labor. You could go tonight or you could go past your due date.
2 cm is a good start at 37 weeks. 50% effaced means your cervix has thinned out to 1/2 way complete. -2 Refers to the station of the baby. If I remember right when the baby's head is ready to crown, you are at station 4. I think it starts at -4 so your baby has dropped down a little.
I was 2cm for weeks with all mine. My last one I got all the way to 5 before they induced me. Just think of it like this, every cm you can dilate with no pain and no real contractions is just a cm closer to your baby being in your arms and puts you closer to delivery with less pain :)
Best wishes! I am still stuck at 34 weeks :(

I am almost 34 weeks and I am dilated to 5 cm and 50% effaced and -2. I have been this way since I was 31 weeks. I was put into the hospital for 4 days since I was having contractions 3-4 min apart and they lasted for all 4 days. I never progressed. I am now almost 34 weeks and I am still the same. It all depends on the person and how their body reacts to contractions. Good luck

I am 1 cm ,50 percent effaced and -2 and also 37 weeks. So it sounds like we are in the same boat :) My midwife said it could be 2 days away or 2 weeks away. She said she couldnt promise anything. I also went to the hospital today because i lost my mucus plug 2 days ago and i was having contractions 3-5 min apart. They sent me home and said it was because they werent strong enough even though they were so close. So basically i have my bags packed and ready but im also not thinking to much about it or the time will drag..... on! We are almost done though :) Our baby's will come when they come! I hope they arnt too stubborn though! :)

Your cervix has opened 2 centimeters out of 10 for the baby to pass through (dilated). And your cervix has thinned out to half of what it needs to be thinned (that is what the term effaced means).
Labor could happen in a day or a week or possibly more depending on your body as it is different with every woman and every pregnancy.
But I would suggest making sure you have your bags packed. Very exciting!
Good luck and Congrats!

Basically all that means is that you are progressing toward labor. Which is good! It's about time, right!? But there is no guarantee on how long it will take you to get from where you are to delivering your baby. Some women go from zero to baby in 3 hours (like my MIL with all three of her kids) and some people sit at 1cm and 100% effaced for over a month with no baby (like me with our son!).
Every woman and every pregnancy is different. Keep in mind too, that first time moms are more likely to be over due-so your little one may be in there for a while yet. I know it's hard, but try to keep yourself distracted and your baby will be here soon enough.
Congrats!

It could be any time now, if you are that far along. Everyone has individual pregnancies, so you really can't tell when it will happen, it's different for every woman. I have known women who stay at 3cm for 2-3 weeks before labour, and other women who go into labour at 1 cm the day they are told.

Spotting is completely normal!! You are really sensitive up there right now. It was probably light reddish when it was new, then it started to fade all the way to brown. By tomorrow it should be done. Don't worry!

Could be days, could be weeks. I was dilated to 3 for 3 weeks before I had my 1st.
