Well obviously, rent. You need to consider deposits, application fees. I hope your credit is straight. Otherwise you will shell out more dough. I moved out on my own at 16 and it is tough out here in the real world. Although I turned out fine. You can do it. But keep in mind that if you are 20 and have no clue about basic necessities that one must pay for, I suggest you stay at home and stack your money and not get into debt. You will probably need electricity, some places gas, some places water, phone, internet, cable. Depending on where you live, that can be 700-1200 a month alone. Not including if you have a car payment, insurance, cell phone, like to shop, go out to eat, etc. Stay at home! You will have the rest of your life to pay bills.

Well savings help - but remember most of these expenses come around every month:

Mortgage or Rent, Utilities (water, sewer, electricity, gas, phone), trash removal, yard work ( I hire mine done due to a disability), groceries, stuff for the medicine cabinet - cough syrup, Pepto etc. , Insurance (home and car), car payments if you have one, ADD TO SAVINGS ACCOUNT, computer (DSL, broadband or dial up), TV, and if you do not own a washer and dryer - save a lot of coins for the laundra-mat! These are just the basics - I am sure if I really thought about it - the list would go for a mile! Good luck - a roommate makes it cheaper to venture into the vast unknown!

Well it's about more than just saving... you need a constant income that is enough to pay for things that re-occur. There is an apartment, or room... sometimes they come with utilities paid. utilities include electricity, gas, water, and sometimes sewer. (sewer can be included w/ water sometimes too). There is phone service, Internet, cell phone... Transportation whether that be a car + insurance and gas... possibly a car payment, or bus pass. There is food, which takes planning out and shopping if you want to save money. then you have your clothing, which includes laundry (which could be done at home or at the laundromat) Soaps, shampoos, dish soap, housecleaning items... I can't think of anything else...

My daughter is 28 and has her own apartment these are a few of the things she has to pay for:
1-rent
2-food
3- clothes any new ones and washing and up keep of the old ones.
4- In her apartment she also pays for cooking gas, electricity- phone, cable, Internet connection.
5-carfare to and from work
6-lunch
7-personal items- menses pad, toothpaste, toilet paper, makeup and other incidentals.
8- dish detergent, clothing detergent, paper towels, mops, bucket, items to keep the house clean,
9- bed and bed linens, sofa and chairs for the living room, table to eat on. dishes and pot and pans. silverware. vacuum or broom to keep floors clean. dresser for clothes, lamps if there are no ceiling lamps.
10- My daughter lives in NYC and pays about 800 a month for a one bedroom apartment. In NYC that means a bedroom, living room and a kitchen. The bathroom has to be there so it's not included in the amount of rooms. She has to take a train and a bus to work but you can transfer from one to the other with out paying double fares. Since she'd lived away from home for a while she had things like dishes and pot and pans I gave them to her as a house warming gift when she moved 6 years ago. But she wasn't in school any longer so she didn't have those expenses.
I don't know about where you live but most places want you to have 3 months rent before you move in. So when E moved into her current apartment she needed 2400 dollars plus what ever else she needed for the apartment like blinds and curtains. I forgot to add those types of things to the list. Depending on where you live you might need as much as 6000 dollars if you don't have any thing to move with. IF this will be your first apartment and just remember most of these issues are on going the rent has to be paid every month so does the lights, gas, phone, cable, Internet connection. You will need to wash your clothes at least every two weeks depending on how much you have. You need to buy food at least twice a month and those other items to keep the house clean and livable. So a lot depends on how much money you make now. Do you make enough to have to pay these expenses each and every month??

Rent, deposits utilities, cable, telephone, Internet provider, food, transportation or if u have a car, gas, maintenance and insurance. Tuition, books, personal items(toothpaste, shampoo, etc.) items of clothing, laundry, bedding, towels, cookware, dishes, microwave, furniture, unless apt. comes furnished. Ur biggest expense will be rent, some utilities r included, but not all, with the outrageous price of heating fuel, I doubt if that is going to be included, if it is then the rent will be pushed up. Food is ur next big expense. I just hope u have a good paying job.

Rent or mortgage
Car
Car insurance
Gas
Cable
Internet
Electricity
Your credit cards if you have any
FOOD!
Lunch
Cell phone or LAN line
I buy a latte every day
Entertainment
Misc stuff like toothpaste and OTC meds - if you are a hypochondriac like I am.

Yeah and to furnish the place unless you're parents are really nice like mine and give you a bunch of free stuff like furniture and so on. It gets expensive. I still had to buy lamps and kitchen stuff and so on.

I am 30 and like living on my own but am done with my degrees (unless I go back for a Ph.D.)
Stay home if your parents will let you and are not abusing you.

well the key is if ya gotta save up for it, then the chances are it won't be sustainable!

My expenses roughly cover,

rent
food
power
phone
gas
fuel
insurance

also if you need furniture and stuff like that then you will have to pay that off at the same time

It is expensive! Good luck with it though.

You've got your rent and utilities, food and drugs. laundry, soap, toilet paper, clothes, car expenses, insurance, health and comfort items, entertainment, taxes, gifts, savings, periodicals, phone, medical and dental, continuing education, computer related items, audio or video devices, DVDs, CDs, lattes and any pets to care for?
There's a lot to pay for out there, maybe you should consider living at home till you finish school and find a good job.
